The Discard Quiz by Takunori Kajimoto

Takunori Kajimoto is a professional Japanese Mahjong player and commentator of Mahjong television programs aired in Japan on a satellite broadcasting called ‘Mondo21’. He works at the Mahjong Museum in Chiba (Japan) and is studying the culture and history of Mahjong. Kajimoto took part in many international Mahjong tournaments, e.g. the Mahjong Championship in 2002 (Tokyo, Japan), the Open Chinese Mahjong Tournament from 2002 till 2004, the first European Mahjong Championship in 2005 (Nijmegen, Netherlands) and the first Mahjong World Championship in 2007 (Sìchuān, China).

He was also supervisor at the first European Championship Riichi in 2008 (Hanover, Germany). So far Kajimoto has written several guide books for playing Mahjong and books on Mahjong strategies. ‘The Discard Quiz’ is a good example of the latter; it provides different situations often encountered in a Mahjong game and quizzes your knowledge on which tile would be best to discard. As Mahjong is becoming more famous all over the world nowadays, Kajimoto is trying to translate Japanese books on Mahjong to English.

At 98 pages, it's liberally sprinkled with photos from international Mah-jongg events. Kajimoto's booklet, as you might discern from the photo, is handmade for the time being.

As the title implies, the book is a compilation of 40 "discard quizzes." Hand puzzles are regularly featured in the margins of Kindai Majan, the bi-weekly manga. Kajimoto's booklet addresses the problem which tile is the best to discard.

Highly recommended reading for those Riichi players interested in improving their game.
